Intranet Portal for CDEEO

Business user (DCAS Citywide Diversity and Equal Employment Opportunity) request was to create an intranet portal that allowed specific users to be able to access job related information, updates, documents, video streams, event details and easy maintainability.

I created some mock-ups of the specs provided by the business and once approved project development began. I was responsible for both the front end and backend of the project. The Umbraco CMS system was utilized for this project with Visual Studio .NET, ASP.NET, programming in C#/Razor engine/HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript, Microsoft SQL Server database and Team Foundation Server (TFS) for version control.

The front end was done using Twitter's bootstrap for a responsive layout and its ease of use. The event calendar was set up using a mix of razor and JavaScript to get all the events for the displayed month from Umbraco.

The backend was supported by Visual Studio .NET 2012/2013 with development of all the master pages and user controls (using httphandlers) to handle the various functionalities of the application.

General performance enhancements were added by minifying and bundling all CSS and JS files to reduce http requests and all small static images were converted to base64 strings to further reduce http requests.

Aside from incremental testing, after the development of the application/website was complete testing was performed in a staging environment to make sure all requested functionality was behaving correctly before deploying into the production environment.

The business users were very happy with the outcome and the ease of use of the website itself and the ease of content management, event tracking and the ability to stream videos on demand.
